Sidekick Tutor ("Sidekick", "we") is a browser extension and service run by Long Nguyen in Australia. This policy explains what data Sidekick handles and why. Contact: hello.sidekicktutor@gmail.com.

The short version

  • No page content leaves your browser until you ask a question, and Sidekick asks for your permission before your first one.
  • When you ask, what's open in the tab and your question go to our service and to Anthropic to write the answer. Our service doesn't store them.
  • Our service keeps only a random install ID, a salted hash of your network address, a hash of your licence key if you have one, and question counts. That lets us limit the free plan fairly.
  • No ads, no selling of data, no tracking or analytics.

What stays in your browser

Your settings, the "About you" text, your licence key, your own Anthropic API key if you add one, and the chat for each open tab. Your browser stores them on your device. Chats are cleared when the tab or browser closes. Uninstalling Sidekick deletes all of it.

What is sent, and when

When the sidebar or Settings opens, Sidekick asks our service how many questions you have left. That request carries your install ID and, if you have Pro, your licence key. It carries no page content.

When you ask a question, Sidekick sends:

  • your question and the recent messages in that tab's chat;
  • the page title and address, and the page text, lecture transcript or captions, or the PDF you have open (the whole file if it's short, otherwise its text, which Sidekick reads out of the file on your device);
  • any text you selected;
  • a screenshot of the visible tab while "See my screen" is on. It is on by default, and you can switch it off in the sidebar or in Settings;
  • your "About you" text, if you wrote one.

On the Free and Pro plans this goes to our service, hosted by Cloudflare, which passes it to Anthropic's API and streams the answer back. Our service does not store this content or log it. Anthropic processes it to write the answer. According to Anthropic, it deletes API inputs and outputs within 30 days by default (source) and does not use them to train its models by default (source). Anthropic may keep content that its systems flag as breaking its Usage Policy for up to 2 years, or longer where the law requires.

If you use your own Anthropic API key, the same content goes straight from your browser to Anthropic under your own agreement with them, and not through our service.

What our service stores

  • A random install ID, created when you install Sidekick, with how many questions it has asked this week or month. You can see your install ID in Settings.
  • A salted hash of your network address with a weekly question count, to stop the free plan being abused by reinstalling. We don't store the address itself, and the salt is secret.
  • For Pro: a hash of your licence key, whether it is valid, and its monthly question count. To check that a key is valid, our service sends it to our payment provider, Lemon Squeezy.

These records are deleted 90 days after their last activity. Database backups may keep deleted records for up to 30 days more. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and requests in order to deliver the service.

Payments

Pro is sold through Lemon Squeezy, which acts as merchant of record. It collects your name, email and payment details under its own privacy policy. We receive your email address and order details so we can help with your subscription. We never see your card details.

Where your data goes

Anthropic and Lemon Squeezy are based in the United States. Cloudflare runs a global network, so requests may be handled in a data centre outside Australia.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
  • We don't use analytics or tracking scripts in the extension.
  • We don't use your data to train AI models.
  • We don't collect your browsing. Sidekick reads the open tab when you open the sidebar or ask a question. The one exception stays on your device: some lecture players don't publish a transcript, so while a video plays Sidekick keeps a note of the on-screen captions in that page's memory. They're sent only if you ask a question on that page, and they're gone when you leave it.

Sidekick's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Your choices and rights

You can switch off "See my screen", clear a chat with "New chat", or uninstall Sidekick at any time. To access or delete the records linked to your install ID or licence key, email us with the install ID shown in Settings. Under the Australian Privacy Principles, and laws such as the GDPR where they apply, you can also ask us to correct your data or complain to a regulator (in Australia, the OAIC).

Age

Sidekick is for people aged 18 and over.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the extension.
